And now to Japan, where today the opposition leader has resigned. It follows a scandal which reduced his partys lead in the opinion polls.
In Tokyo, the resignation of opposition leader Ichiro Ozawa comes after a funding scandal involving a close aide. The opinion polls show the scandal was clouding his party's prospects in the coming election.

[Ichiro Ozawa, Democratic Party Leader]:
"I have decided that by my retiring from my position, we will be able to strengthen our party's solidarity and speak more loudly in one voice as we strive to achieve our ultimate goal of a change in government."

Ozawa denies he resigned to take responsibility for the scandal.

A solid opposition victory would be needed to break the deadlock that is stalling policy decisions as Japan struggles with a deepening recession. A survey by a mass circulation newspaper published today shows the Democrats still have a razor-thin lead, but its narrowed after the scandal.

Voter frustrations with Prime Minister Taro Aso had raised the chances Ozawa would lead his Democratic Party to victory, ending more than 50 years of nearly unbroken rule by Aso's Liberal Democratic Party.
