Gov. Benigno R. Fitial left for Tokyo on Sunday for a medical emergency in the family, but he will be staying there until after a possible meeting with Japan Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama on Thursday, to discuss issues surrounding the possible relocation of up to 4,000 American troops from the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station at Futenma in Okinawa to Tinian.

Hatoyama was quoted by Stars and Stripes yesterday as giving up on his self-imposed May 31 deadline for getting approval from the U.S. and local governments on an alternate plan to move Marine air operations from Ginowan.
