Noriyuki Shikata, a spokesman for the Japanese prime minister, said that it was "regrettable" if China had indeed suspended top-level contacts over the issue.

"What we do under this situation is to handle this case calmly in accordance with Japanese legal procedures," he told AFP news agency.
