Fiji's interim Prime Minister has told the United Nations General Assembly he wants respect, dignity and equality, as he justified his government's efforts to seek new allies.

Since the coup in 2006, Fiji has been suspended from the Commonwealth and the Pacific Islands Forum.

Japan has demanded China pull back two fisheries patrol boats from near a disputed island chain at the centre of the worst diplomatic row in years between the two countries.

The row started after Tokyo arrested a Chinese trawler skipper accused of ramming two of Japan's coastguard ships.
